{"id":522,"date":"2017-02-28T10:58:48","date_gmt":"2017-02-28T15:58:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/?p=522"},"modified":"2017-03-26T18:08:24","modified_gmt":"2017-03-26T23:08:24","slug":"muntons-connoisseurs-export-pilsner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/2017\/02\/28\/muntons-connoisseurs-export-pilsner\/","title":{"rendered":"Muntons Connoisseurs Export Pilsner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Muntons-Pilsner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-523\" src=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Muntons-Pilsner-1024x714.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Muntons-Pilsner-1024x714.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Muntons-Pilsner-300x209.jpg 300w, http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Muntons-Pilsner-768x536.jpg 768w, http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Muntons-Pilsner.jpg 1620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/a>What if we took what some would consider mediocre ingredients and tried to make great beer from them?\u00a0 Let&#8217;s see:<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Recipe<\/strong><\/p>\n<pre>Name: Muntons Connoisseurs Export Pilsner\r\nBatch size: 4.75 gallons\r\nExpected OG: 1.050\r\nExpected IBU: ??\r\nMash: none\r\n\r\n   1 can Muntons Connoisseurs Export Pilsner hopped extract kit\r\n 1.0 lb  Brewers Crystals\r\n 1.0 lb  Turbinado sugar\r\n         Yeast nutrient\r\n\r\n2 packs Wyeast 2000 Budvar Lager\r\n<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Notes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t a total slum-brew since we&#8217;re not just using 2 lbs of table sugar.\u00a0 Instead, we had some Brewers Crystals lying around which we decided to use.\u00a0 These look like corn sugar (dextrose) and are in fact made from corn, but mimic the fermentability profile of regular barley wort by containing mostly maltose and some unfermentable sugars.\u00a0 They boost alcohol without losing body.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re also using Turbinado sugar because why not; maybe they&#8217;ll add some interesting flavors to an otherwise lower-gravity kit.\u00a0 It might turn out that the flavor doesn&#8217;t quite work in what&#8217;s supposed to be a pretty clean beer, but we&#8217;re hopeful.<\/p>\n<p>We hit 1.052 original gravity and lazy-chilled to 53\u00b0F before pitching 2 packs of Wyeast Budvar Lager.\u00a0 We did not aerate, though we probably should have.\u00a0 10 days after pitching we raised the temperature to 63\u00b0F for a diacetyl rest and to help the yeast finish the ferment.\u00a0 11 days after pitching the gravity had dropped to 1.018, and 16 days after pitching it was still dropping at 1.016.\u00a0 We haven&#8217;t checked it again yet but we&#8217;d like to end somewhere around 1.013.\u00a0 Whenever it&#8217;s done, we&#8217;ll cold-crash for a few days then rack over to a serving keg for the lagering process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3\/26\/2017 Update<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It finished at 1.014 and tasted like Chardonnay during kegging.\u00a0 We&#8217;re not sure if that&#8217;s due to lager yeast not liking Turbinado sugar or what.\u00a0 It cleaned up in the keg, but it still has a wine-like taste when it gets warm.\u00a0 But serve it chilled at 35 degrees and it&#8217;s kinda like Grain Belt: kinda-not-really hoppy, with a slightly sweet finish.
