{"id":402,"date":"2015-04-19T09:09:15","date_gmt":"2015-04-19T14:09:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/?p=402"},"modified":"2015-04-19T09:09:15","modified_gmt":"2015-04-19T14:09:15","slug":"simcoe-ipa-tasting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/2015\/04\/19\/simcoe-ipa-tasting\/","title":{"rendered":"Simcoe IPA Tasting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/tasting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-403\" src=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/tasting.jpg\" alt=\"tasting\" width=\"400\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/tasting.jpg 400w, http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/tasting-257x300.jpg 257w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>We <a href=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/2015\/03\/28\/simcoepilsner-smash-ipa\/\">brewed this in late March<\/a> and it&#8217;s almost gone, because people keep asking for growlers.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll take that as a good sign.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also entered in a competition, although in the ever-popular IPA category, and we&#8217;ll post an update if it wins anything.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Appearance:<\/strong> straw gold, very clear (ignore the picture, that&#8217;s the end of the keg).\u00a0 IPAs are typically darker than this (which may cause a point deduction in the competition) but since Pilsner is the only malt in the beer, this is no surprise.\u00a0 It pours with a one-finger head which quickly falls back to a thing ring around the top, which clings to the glass.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Smell:<\/strong> some said &#8220;grapefruit&#8221;, but we get some mango.\u00a0 There is <em>none<\/em> of the supposedly typical Simcoe pine-tree or cat-urine.\u00a0 We do smell the sweeter notes of Pilsner malt too, but overall, even with the dry-hops and higher carbonation (which carries the smell to your nose) we don&#8217;t get a ton of aroma.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taste:<\/strong> Pilsner, like a Czech Pilsner.\u00a0 And citrus.\u00a0 Some said &#8220;grapefruit peel&#8221; and we do get a bit of that.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a good initial bitterness but not overly agressive, dissolving into a mellow citrus-flavored finish.\u00a0\u00a0 All in all, a great easy-drinking summer beer.\u00a0 We think it&#8217;s a bit too sweet due to only using the Pilsner malt, so next time we&#8217;ll be using it 50 or 60% 2-row.\u00a0 No longer a SMASH, but hopefully a more balanced beer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mouthfeel:<\/strong> nicely balanced body, not thin at all.\u00a0 It&#8217;s light enough to drink a couple pints but heavy enough that you know you&#8217;re drinking an IPA.\u00a0 Nailed this, despite 0% crystal malt or Carapils, possibly due to the higher mash temperature (152\u00b0F) and higher carbonation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Next time:<\/strong> we&#8217;ll probably use 40 to 60% 2-row (or maybe even Marris Otter) to cut down on the Pilsner sweetness to create a more &#8220;American&#8221; style beer.\u00a0 We think the hop schedule worked extremely well, though we might add 1\/4oz more 60 minute hops for a more aggressive start.\u00a0 We Brewed It Right.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We brewed this in late March and it&#8217;s almost gone, because people keep asking for growlers.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll take that as a good sign.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also entered in a competition, although in the ever-popular IPA category, and we&#8217;ll post an update if it wins anything.
