bit, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0000950PQ\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B0000950PQ&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=britri-20&amp;linkId=XQTTSEEZIJGNYSFJ\">utility knife<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00166OALC\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00166OALC&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=britri-20&amp;linkId=UQBI72GJYIVJORZJ\">safety glasses<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0088L9URC\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B0088L9URC&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=britri-20&amp;linkId=OEW2ZX2FIVKUZR52\">Teflon tape<\/a>, and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B009CMV9D4\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B009CMV9D4&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=britri-20&amp;linkId=TJGFUPOY2DX6HFN3\">hacksaw<\/a> (not pictured).<\/p>\n<h5>A Brief Word on Stainless Tubing<\/h5>\n<p>If you&#8217;re observant you&#8217;ll note I bought my internal filter\/dip tube from McMaster Carr because they&#8217;re awesome, not because they&#8217;re cheap.\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t find cheap stainless high-polish tubes on the Internet, despite lots of searching.\u00a0 I really tried.\u00a0 McMaster&#8217;s tubing <em>is<\/em> high-polish but it&#8217;s also 0.065&#8243; wall which is really hard to drill with small bits.\u00a0 More on this later.<\/p>\n<h5>Step 1:\u00a0 Put a hole in a box<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/stopper1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-39\" src=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/stopper1-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"stopper\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/stopper1-300x205.jpg 300w, http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/stopper1.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Actually, first you want to cut the #2 solid stopper in half.\u00a0 The solid stopper (rather than a drilled one) forms a better seal at the bottom of the filter housing and helps keep the filter tube in place, as you&#8217;ll see later.\u00a0 Discard the large end, and shave down the edges of of the small end so it fits very snugly in the end of your stainless tube.\u00a0 When inserted in the filter housing, the stopped will keep the tube upright and stable while you screw on the filter&#8217;s cap.<\/p>\n<h5>Step 2: Measure and cut your tube<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/tube-cutting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-40 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/tube-cutting-300x229.jpg\" alt=\"tube-cutting\" width=\"300\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/tube-cutting-300x229.jpg 300w, http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/tube-cutting.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>This is really the only hard part; you really don&#8217;t want to cut it too short, or it won&#8217;t seal right.\u00a0 And obviously you can&#8217;t cut it too long, or the cap can&#8217;t seal.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re using the same filter I am, then a length of 9 5\/16&#8243; is about right.\u00a0 9 3\/8&#8243; isn&#8217;t going to kill you though.\u00a0 If you just cut this length, fine, don&#8217;t blame me if it doesn&#8217;t work. Make sure it&#8217;s the right length first, by cutting longer than you need, checking, and then recutting if you need to.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t want to F this up or you&#8217;re out $15.<\/p>\n<h5>Step 3: Taper your tube<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/taper.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-41 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/taper-300x228.jpg\" alt=\"taper\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/taper-300x228.jpg 300w, http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/taper.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The listed cartridge filter outlet at the top of the cap isn&#8217;t quite 3\/4&#8243; in diameter, so you&#8217;ll want to taper one end of the stainless tube to make sure it fits into the hole in the filter cap.\u00a0 You can do this with either a Dremmel or a metal file, but either way, just keep filing it down all around the end of the tube until it fits snuggly into the filter head.\u00a0 Remember to put a silicon O-Ring in the filter cap first, which forms the top seal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4: Drill like a Boss<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/drill.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-44\" src=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/drill-185x300.jpg\" alt=\"drill\" width=\"185\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/drill-185x300.jpg 185w, http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/drill.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 185px) 100vw, 185px\" \/><\/a>Here&#8217;s where you make the Randall a Randall.\u00a0 You want to drill a bunch of 1\/8&#8243; holes in the <em>opposite<\/em> end of the stainless tube from the taper you just made.\u00a0 This is the end that sits at the bottom of the filter and sucks up all the hoppy goodness that your Randall was born to provide.\u00a0 Just drill some holes.\u00a0 You can drill as many or as few as you like, and in whatever pattern you like.\u00a0 Drill baby drill!\u00a0 Show your true colors.<\/p>\n<p>I drilled two rows 90 degrees apart, all the way through, from 1\/4&#8243; to 2 1\/2&#8243; from the bottom of the pipe.\u00a0 You&#8217;re drilling at the bottom (where the stopper will be) because the beer flows from the top of the filter, through the hops, and down to the bottom of the filter where the holes in your stainless tube filter out any large particles and finally channel the beer out of the filter and into your tap.<\/p>\n<p>When you&#8217;re done, grind out all the burrs and make sure both the inside and outside of the tube are smooth.\u00a0 Use a file or a Dremmel or sandpaper or whatever you want.\u00a0 But you really don&#8217;t want metal filings in your beer.<\/p>\n<h5>Step 5: Fit like a Boss<\/h5>\n<p>Now you get to wrap the MPT ends of your MFL\/MPT fittings in Teflon tape, and carefully screw them into the filter cap.\u00a0 Remember, the cap is plastic, so you don&#8217;t want to screw them down too hard and split the cap or strip the threads.\u00a0 Screw them finger-tight, and then use a crescent wrench to turn them about one or two more turns until they are snug.<\/p>\n<h5>Step 6: Put it all together<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/top.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-46 alignnone\" style=\"margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" src=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/top-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"top\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/top-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/top.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/bottom1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-50\" style=\"margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" src=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/bottom1-179x300.jpg\" alt=\"bottom\" width=\"179\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/bottom1-179x300.jpg 179w, http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/bottom1.jpg 299w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 179px) 100vw, 179px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Insert the half-stopper into the bottom of the stainless tube, at the same end your drilled the holes.\u00a0 Then put one of the silicone O-Rings into the center hole of the filter cap.\u00a0 Insert the tapered end of the stainless tube into the filter cap, and then carefully screw the filter cap down onto the filter, making sure the rubber stopper end seats correctly into the bottom of the filter.\u00a0 Guess what?\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got a Randall.<\/p>\n<h5>Using your Randall<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/randall-in-use.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-59\" src=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/randall-in-use-300x283.jpg\" alt=\"randall-in-use\" width=\"300\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/randall-in-use-300x283.jpg 300w, http:\/\/brewitright.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/randall-in-use.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>So you&#8217;re going to a party and bringing your kegs and your Randall because you&#8217;re the Guy with the Beer.\u00a0 How do you use this thing?\u00a0 Well, you hook CO2 up to your keg, then you hook your beverage out line to the Randall&#8217;s &#8220;in&#8221; side.\u00a0 Then you hook your tap up to the Randall&#8217;s &#8220;out&#8221; side.<\/p>\n<p>Next up, what to put inside?\u00a0 Leap hops, clearly.\u00a0 <em>Never ever use pellets.<\/em>\u00a0 But think outside the box here.\u00a0 Grapefruit.\u00a0 Bell peppers.\u00a0 Cherries.\u00a0 Hot peppers.\u00a0 Vanilla beans.\u00a0 But if you ever do hops, I have some advice; soak them in water overnight first, otherwise you&#8217;re going to <strong>taste bitter grass<\/strong> all night and nobody will drink your beer.\u00a0 The AA of your hops won&#8217;t really matter much, what you&#8217;re getting out of your hops are the aroma and flavor chemicals.\u00a0 Remember, if something doesn&#8217;t taste good, you can always take it out and put something else in, even in the middle of the keg.<\/p>\n<p>So there you go.\u00a0 Randall hard, my friends!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My brother-in-law&#8217;s birthday was coming up, and this year he&#8217;s been into Randalls.\u00a0 So I figured why not build one, I know there are plans out there.\u00a0 You can even buy them on eBay, but how much fun is that?\u00a0 Rhetorical question;
